Hollywood Dolls Survival 101
by Bryan Penn
Planning, preparation and practice are the only steps to
follow to ensure that you can successfully deal with a critical
situation when you are on horseback or on foot in rugged terrain.
Survival planning is acknowledging the fact that anything can
happen at any time day or night. Preparation is the key element
in survival. Practice using all of your tools and follow the
steps listed below. Know your equipment. Carry these items on
your body, not your horse, at all times. Be SAFE!
1. Knife
My recommendation is to only purchase a knife with a serrated
edge. If you wish to carry a folding knife it must be able to
lock. I recommend a folding knife made by Benchmade or Kershaw.
If you wish to carry a fixed blade knife I recommend a knife
made by Buck or Al Mar. This is the most essential tool you must
have. Your knife will protect you from harm and enable you to
free an injured horse or person.
2. 550 Cord or Baling Twine
Any tack item i.e. Bridle, Saddle, Reins can break at anytime.
You must be able to repair your broken piece of equipment out
on trail. 550 Cord or baling twine can also be used in First Aid.
3. Cellular Telephone
Make sure you have your local Emergency Park Ranger number
programmed into your phone. When you dial 911 from your mobile
telephone it reaches Highway Patrol Emergency Dispatch first,
then the emergency operator must transfer your call and this
wastes time. Every second counts in a medical emergency.
4. Signaling Tools & Equipment
a. Make-Up compact with a mirror will do just fine or you may pick up a survival signal mirror at any Army Surplus Store.
b. Whistle (this signal travels further than a human voice)
c. Emergency Blanket (available at any Army Surplus Store )
d. First Aid Kit and include any medication you require daily.
